Wisconsin Dells

When Miles was about six months old we used some of Chris' paternity leave to go up to Wisconsin Dells and escape the winter. This city has a myriad of indoor water parks. The place where we stayed both times has three indoor water parks that are all inclusive with your stay:). From the first time we decided there was one thing we could've done better and that was to go with another family. Since this was so last minute I thought the chances of getting friends to go would be slim but we lucked out! It was the perfect week for our friends the Watkins to go. They'd been to The Dells before and wanted to go back with another family as well.

So we left on a Wednesday morning enjoyed three days of water, arcades, slides, and mustn't forget the candy shop. This time round Chris and I were able to go on a few rides we couldn't last year because they had to have at least two riders and Jared was too short to be a second rider. We swapped with the Watkins and enjoyed the thrill:). We even tried to get Jared on one of the rides and they let him. He loved it. I loved watching his face. This kid is expressive and talked it up after he was done. I can't wait for theme parks when all my boys are tall enough. It's going to be a blast!

Jared Student of the Week

The week he was suppose to be student of the week our family whimsically decided to go on a mini vacation so his teacher said he could do it the next week. Well, unbeknownst to us we would be traveling to Idaho for a funeral. His teacher was very understanding and let him do his poster on Tuesday instead of Friday. (Those two weeks he only went to school twice! They had Monday off both weeks and we were gone Wed-Fri both weeks. If I'd known we'd been going to Idaho we wouldn't have gone the first week. Oh well!)
This was his poster.
We hurried and did it Monday night. Jared pretty much did it all by himself. The only part I helped with was gluing the stuff in the center. Other than that I just shouted out suggestions for him to look for in magazines. I thought he did a good job:).
He said all the boys were wearing suits.
On the left it says (written correctly), I wish I had magic, I wish I had wii games, and I wish I had 3DS games. (He's a little obsessed with electronics, we're working on it...). In the center his favorite things are: ice cream, legos, water parks, chocolate, diamonds?, ring pops, DS games, popsicles, and Wii games. On the right it says: I am 46 inches tall and I weigh 48 lbs. My hair is blonde and my favorite color is red (just changed this year from blue to red, I don't know which one to believe). I am 6 years old and my name is Jared.
When he grows up he wants to be a tennis player. He drew this before I could throw out suggestions... Good picture and honest answer at the moment. The things he doesn't like is my favorite. He doesn't like: Potatoes (very true, never has even fries), Dora (I really don't like Dora and I guess I voice that too much because he used to like her. I don't mind if my kids watch her I just can't stand listening to her), doll houses, broccoli (used to love and now I have to threaten him to eat them), and my favorite... Waiting. Ha, ha! His picture is of me talking to another sibling while he is waiting. Love it! And he did this all by himself.
I love this boy and really I couldn't have done it better myself!

Stories to Remember

One day I was reading a non-fiction book to Jared on lots of interesting facts. One was on oil in Texas. We got talking about where oil comes from and that it's a scarce commodity and that we need to try and conserve when we can so we don't run out. From our conversation I could tell his main understanding of oil is that it's used for gas. So today on the way home from church he said, "Mom, before oil runs out can we move to Idaho to make sure we can still see our Grandmas." Love his thinking and his innocence.

Spencer has made it known on several occassions to me that he loves his grandmas more than me. He doesn't say it flat out. It's more like, "Mom, I love grandma bigger than this house." To which I say, "How much do you love me?" "...not as big as this house." Chris heard the conversation and asked Spencer if he wanted to go live with his grandmas instead to which he replied no. Deep down I guess I win just not if you ask him and I'm ok with that:).

The Monday before Valentines Day for our family night I made 20 hearts, 4 for everyone to write a nice message to our immediate family members. (All of Jared's said, "I love you because you love me.") They were nice and when we read them aloud I could tell the kids liked hearing what others had to say to them (who doesn't?!) At the end Chris was wrapping it up and then asked me if I had anything else I wanted to say which took me off guard. I suddenly got teary eyed and told them how important they all were to me and that there was no one in the entire world who I loved or cared as much about as those in the room with me. Spencer got mad at me for crying, Miles came over gave me kisses and said, "You ok?" and Jared said in disbelief, "Even your mom?!" To which I said, "Yes and I love my mom a lot so that means I love you guys a whole lot!" He got a sly grin on his face and in half laughter while shaking his head he said, "You better not tell your mom!"

And just for records sake here are the songs we included on this year's Valentine CD:
Skinny Love- Bon Iver
We Are the Champions - Queen
Rolling in the Deep - Adele
Istanbul (On Wii Dance for kids)
She's in Love with the Boy - Trisha Yearwood
Hey, Soul Sister - Train (Jared and I like this one)
We Will Rock You - Queen (Jared's Favorite)
Help! - The Beatles (Spencer's favorite)
I'm Gonna Catch You (Jared and Spencer like dancing to this on Wii Dance for Kids)
Beautiful Day - U2
Our House - Madness
Y.M.C.A
The Cave - Mumford & Sons (Chris' Favorite and I like it a lot too)
Fun, Fun, Fun - Beach Boys

And so I can add some pictures... Here's the boys playing legos. I brought them to their attention this week and they've been entertaining themselves for hours playing. I love you legos!

Norine Meservy 1910-2012

We received the call late Saturday night on the 18th of February. Chris' Great Gram had died. It took me by complete surprise. I was sad and shed a few tears that evening as the realization hit me that I wouldn't see her again. Yes she was turning 102 next month, and we realized it was possible of her going anytime, but she was healthy for a 101 year-old that I didn't expect it happening so soon. I thought there would have been some warning or signs of decline leading up to her death but there wasn't any of that.

Really she left perfectly and beautifully. She hadn't been feeling well that uday and asked Jim for a Priesthood Blessing. She was put to bed and not even three minutes after the attendants left her daughter came in to say goodnight and she was gone, quietly and gently.

She had a good strong mind up until the end. Up until a month prior she had been on her own, living with her dog Candy in her little trailer. Only after a fall that scared her did she decide to go in to assisted living. She had a wonderful (WONDERFUL) daughter that saw her daily, took her shopping, to doctor appointments, or whatever else she needed. She had a wonderful grandson, my father-in-law, that called her daily to check in on her and took her out often for a meal or brought one in to her.
Whenever we visited for the summer or Christmas they were sure to have dinners at their house or picnics with her. She was loved. Jared when seeing Great Gram would often say, "I love her."

We told the kids the next morning about her passing and Jared cried and was really sad. The other two didn't know quite what to do. I knew it would be important for our family to make it to her funeral and pay our last respects. This was the first death of someone close to any of them and I could tell it wasn't really sinking in. Jared and Spencer would occasionally make comments like, "Is she dead yet?" "Will she be dead when we get there?".

We set off Tuesday afternoon for our 24 hour drive to Idaho. The boys did amazing especially considering we had a 3 hour detour through Colorado seeing Wyoming's roads were closed due to weather. We arrived Wednesday evening just in time for the end of her viewing. It was a tender moment to witness as Jared walked up to his great-great grandmother who was lifeless and still. His little heart broke and the tears spilled freely as he the realization sunk in. I cried with him and embraced him. We talked lots about eternal families and gratitude that we knew great gram for as long as we did. He was able to compose himself and stop crying when talking with grandma and grandpa but several times he'd go up to look at her and he'd start crying again. Before coming Chris had told them we were coming to pay respect to her and say good-bye. Right before leaving I gave Jared a warning that we'd be leaving soon. We had made arrangements with my sister to leave them with her during the funeral so he knew this was his last time to see her. He walked up to her casket and through tears and muffled talking he said, "Bye Great Gram. See you in heaven." He really loved her and I cried again with him.

Spencer and Miles did exactly what I expected them to do. Spencer was a little weirded out and just wanted to leave. Miles was curious more about her coffin and had no idea what was going on.
The funeral was lovely and I learned some interesting facts about Great Gram. She was only three pounds when she was born. She is half Finnish, her father was from Finland. Her first home after being married there was no running water so her husband brought it in daily. She lived in Jerome for a short period. She grew up in the horse and buggy era. She loved flowers. There was lots more but those are some things that stuck out to me that I wasn't aware of or hadn't thought of before (horse and buggy).

After the funeral I raced to my sisters to grab the kids, dress them, and head off to the burial site. We missed the dedication prayer but that's all right. I think the kids still appreciated seeing her burial site and they had already lowered her casket into its resting place. Talk about quick service.

I'm sad we weren't able to see her one last time, but I'm grateful my boys and I were able to know her. "See you in Heaven Great Gram:)".
